You don't have to break the bank to celebrate the holidays in style—even in this season of inflation. Prices may be higher on everything from food to gifts to decorations, but there are still plenty of opportunities to eke out extra savings.

For example, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), you can save a couple of hundred dollars a year just by sealing your home and boosting its insulation.1 Other small fixes—such as swapping old light bulbs for LEDs and plugging electronics into a powerstrip—can boost your yearly savings enough to pay off some of your holiday budget.

And thanks to a pandemic-era boom in online shopping, it is easier than ever to find deals on new and pre-owned furniture, thrifted gifts, DIY decor, and more. Even secondhan...

NPR's Planet Money has come out with a very short (as in 5 to 7 minutes) blog about the rollercoaster of the economy that governs our lives.

Here's what they say about it...

A little show about big ideas

The economy can feel like a rollercoaster, with its ups and downs and sudden turns. On The Indicator from Planet Money, our new mini-podcast, we make sure understanding it is an enjoyable ride. The show is hosted by Planet Money's own Stacey Vanek Smith and former Financial Times Alphaville editor-host Cardiff Garcia.

In each episode, they take a number, phrase, or concept from the news and, using Planet Money's trademark style of witty narrative journalism, explain its importance. And in 5 to 7 minutes. It's a quick hit o...

OK - so it's been awhile since we added to our blog, but it's a new year, and we're loaded with ideas for our clients and friends.

When you break it down, really... isn't taking the nibble approach - yes, that means making small - but better -  decisions each and every day about how you spend your money, what will make the difference in the long run?

To that end, we are embarking on a series of 150 tips that will make it so much easier when you've narrowed your choice down to 1 or 2, and just plain duh... why didn't I think of that myself... Ah-ha moments!

Join us on our journey, and check back often to see what you can glean.

For starters... (and with t...

Affordable New Housing in RVA - isn't something we hear much about.

HH Hunt is at least making a start, but wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have

  • New homes
  • That aren't townhouses or postage stamped sized condos
  • Are located in popular areas and
  • Cost what many first-time buyers want to pay

I guess it's a dream - but at least this is a start.

If they are successful, maybe they'll put them up elsewhere, possibly downsize a bit, make them a little less glitzy and delete the garage - then we'd be talking maybe low $300,000 range?

Still pricey but at least more affordable.
